CHARACTER INFO
• Character Name: Astarion Ancunin
• Character Age: He is around 240. He was turned into a vampire at 39 and then he lived for roughly two centuries.
• Character Canon: Baldur's Gate 3
• Canon Point: At the beginning of Act 3. He was moving toward Baldur's Gate when the Githyanki attacked the camp and when he crossed the astral portal he was dropped near Milton instead of proceeding with the rest of the group.
• Character History: Here we go, his wiki. Up to Act II this is the choices for his canon here.
• Character Personality:
— Resilient: Good luck trying to break Astarion. Whatever you come up with, Cazador did worse already. He has a strong survival instinct that we know has only been challenged once in his long life (While buried 'alive' for a year without any contact or food or even sounds around him, he did wish for death) and he has the habit to force himself back into his feet. His resilience is found both in his body, physical pain can hold him back so much (He was flayed. Often. And that's not even him lying, that's stated in one of his nightmares), and his mind.
He is afraid and he will often act like even the most minor issue inconveniences him, but he's much stronger than he'll let others believe.
— Resourceful: He is a rather smart guy. He is not only very observant of people, being able to read them with relative ease, but he's also quick to study his surroundings and make the best of them. He knows how to patch things up, he knows how to make the best out of ugly situations and he'll always be inclined to take advantage of anything that can be used. He's not the kind of guy who says 'I don't know how to do it, so I give up' unless he knows the other person can do that thing themselves and wants to take advantage of that. It's not being lazy, it's saving energies.
— Pragmatic: he may be afraid of many things, but he keeps his head on his shoulders most of the time (as long as his formar master isn't involved) and tries to look at things from a realistic point of view. He will not throw himself into danger that's impossible to handle (When you're approaching an enemy army in act 2, he does warn you that there's a thin line between heroism and stupidity and he's not going to cross it') but he'll not also shiver in a corner if things have to be done and he knows he has the potential to handle the situation. He is also going to identify dangers and potential vantage points with ease and push people toward the most secure path wherever possible.
— Fearful: He may talk big and proud, but he's someone who spent a lot of time suffering, being tortured and being a slave, much of what he does is driven by the need to feel himself safe, to feel like he has people around he can use and resources he can rely on in order to survive. It's not even an interpretation of his persona, it's literally what you can find reading the interviews of those who wrote him (for example). He will take forever to be even honest with people (Even companions) and much of what he'll say is lie after lie, acting like he is in control of everything and overly confident. This is especially evident when it comes to relationships. He plays around with people, use them, but the only two canonical, non player dependent times we see him talk about the times he allowed himself to 'feel' (An unnamed sweet boy and another man named Sebastian) he was punished in incredibly harsh ways- All the flirty and joyful attitude is a facade and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
He also tends to be rather pessimistic when it comes to his interactions with people, often assuming they're after something and doubting that people can be genuinely 'that' good. Heroes didn't exist for him, gods ignored his pleas, and he became rather disenchanted in others.
— Selfish: He can and will place himself first no matter what, not at the point in canon I get him from. At his point he'll not put himself in danger for others unless he can get something from it (or it's someone he moderately trusts/who voluntereed to be his food). He will try to pass as a generous soul by offering the blood drained animals he'll catch, but it'll mostly be small things in order to gain the favor of the locals. A small community is difficult to handle for him, he needs to eat but he also needs the local snacks not to attack him when they'll figure out he's a vampire and be well disposed toward him when and if he'll be forced to ask them for blood.
He also has a painful association between him being genuinely generous and his master punishing him harshly, so he will definitelly always put himself first. Even in his 'Folk Hero' ending, despite being 'good', he mentions he's enjoying it because "Folks like it when you kill it the right people".
If the Main Character helps him and shows him he has no reasons to be afraid, that he's not alone and takes care of his old master, one can find out he has deep down an inclination to helping others (His Folk Hero ending) but it's something that has to be identified by others and nutrured.
— Liar: Who you get when you meet Asttarion is the mask he wears most of the time. He comes off as a superficial man who flirts easily and tends to dislike the idea of helping without a return. He talks loud and strong, but makes sure he can apprear as someone almost naive and too full of himself to see the reality around him. It takes a lot of effort to see under those defensive layers of him and find ot that he's a deeply traumatized man who acts most of the time in the way he feels that will keep him safer. He barely knows how to be his own person, as mentioned above he's often driven by fears and living for almost 200 years being a slave, being tortured and being a sex slave/using his body to lure preys to his master- well, there's a general 'what now?' in him.
Getting the truth out of him will still be hard, though, he may decide to share more than lies but he'll probably carefully pick what to share or what to keep for himself.
- Athletic: He is known for his high dexterity and his skills in dodging things and avoiding the danger. It's literally one of his strong points ingame- he has good equilibrium, can balance himself well, can do acrobatics of various sorts. It's basically the standard of rogues in his setting.
- Perceptive: He's super good at reading people, identifying possible dangers around the area and spotting creatures before they enter the field of vision from sounds or maybe tracks left around.
- Stealthy: He knows how to blend with the shadows and hunt from them. As a rogue, he hides with ease, knows how to stalk people and how to pickpocket. His specialty is killing without being seen and he is known to hunt for animals in the shadows to feed himself, to the point you can find a boar he exhangued ingame.
- Astatrion knows how to take care of clothes and such. He knits, he knows how to embroider things, he knows how to patch together any tear in the fabric and he can put it to good use.
- He can perform music. Ingame he can pick any instrument, but since that's rather unbelievable... I'd pick the violin between the ones that are 'canon' ingame.
- A Longbow. With no arrows, he gotta make them himself if he wants to hunt with it.
- His blankie. If you pay attention to the camp in Baldur's Gate 3, you see that wherever Astarion goes he has a ratty tattered blanket that is always sitting there. The fandom pretty much agreed that it's something with deep sentimential value for him and that despite it fallling apart he's stil trying to keep it in one piece.
- His dog. Scratch. Okay, it's the party's dog, but Astarion is claiming the Pup. He is the Goodest Of Good Boys. And it will give Astarion a headache considering he'll have to take care of the Boy as well.
• Important Notes:
- He is a vampire. He canonically mostly feeds on animals and survived for to centuries on rodents and 'garbage', but he has a passion for human blood and he will try to get it. He CAN eat normal food and drinks, but he has no passion for it and it doesn't quite sustain him, with him growing weaker over time and thirst for blood increasing.
- Sunlight and running water can and will damage him. I also don't know if his 'magic' will persist in that sense and he'll be unable to enter occupied houses without invitation but that's up to you.
- He has NO REFLECTION. He says he has been unable to see himself in 200 years.
- There is no canon about which branch of law he was into when he was a magistrate, I generally pick 'property law' for funsies but that's full headcanon territory. All we know is that he upset a group named the Gur while working, monster hunters, and that's how he died (his old master may have been involved) and that hardly gives us enough canon for it. It's also fun having him talk about how high and mighty he was as criminal law magistrate, when instead he secretly has a knack for architecture because he spent so long splitting house between old people's heirs.
- He is the closest thing to an atheist you can get in a game with Gods that do show themselves. Ingame he mentions that he tried all gods in his centuries as Cazador's slave, prayed to them and not a single one responded. It will show up if he interacts with anyone who is strongly religious. Gods are only good at 'demanding things and then sitting back and letting mortals suffer' in his book.
- Tied to the point above: He seems to dislike genuinely selfless and heroic people. The feeling seems to be driven by some sort of resentment because no one ever came for him. It mostly manifests in showing dislike for doing anything for free to help others while in a group, but I am positive he'd be- conflicted over it if someone went out of their ways to save him.
- On his relationship with Sex: Astarion has a terribly complicated relationship with it. He is known in the fandom for being almost constantly seeking it, but after some specific points (when I actually take him, after meeting the blood alchemist Araj) he actually steps back and re-evaluates his stance on it, to the point he even stops sleeping with the maini character if romanced and will break up with them if pushed. He's a man who is rediscovering how to set his personal boundaries after all he's been through and he'll actively not seek any intimacy of that kind.I may or may not have chosen that canon point on purpose, oops?
• Writing Samples: Players must provide TWO prose writing samples. These both must be log threads. Due to the fact there is no network in this game, 'network' or 'texting'-style threads will not be accepted.
